KEREN: Amid all the fun nights out, there was still much work to be done. To hone our dancing skills, Bruno encouraged us to take classes with him or his assistant at Pineapple. I can only remember laughing at our attempts to jeté across the studio, sounding more like a herd of elephants than ballet dancers. We even attempted a few tap classes, but the teacher was quite impatient and made Siobhan cry. Bruno’s instruction for moves was always the same: ‘Butch, butch, butch and butch … and then link it together with a step, darling.’

We had such a riot in the dance studio, and the influences for our moves came from the most unexpected sources. The first move in the dance for ‘Love in the First Degree’, for instance, was a direct steal from Les Dawson doing the ‘Blankety Blank chequebook and pen’!

We made many foreign trips with Bruno and frequently visited his flat in London where he cooked delicious Italian food. His recipes usually involved a ‘sowse’, which was ‘sauce’ in Bruno speak, and after dinner, we’d all play cards. Our favourite game was called Sevens, and it was a regular feature of Saturday nights with Sara, Bruno, Paul, Baillie, hilarious friends Tony Martin and Babs von Vag, and me. I’m not sure if Bruno ever realised how much we all cheated, passing cards under the table, so he was always left with the pack when the idea was to get rid of all your cards. He also had a microphone at his flat, which he’d plug into the stereo for karaoke nights.
